Building and construction features at The Safety Show Sydney
A special feature area dedicated to building and construction at The Safety Show Sydney will solve all sorts of safety challenges – from asbestos through to skin cancer – during each of its three days from October 28 to 30 at the Sydney Showground.
Among the safety products planned for the building and construction feature area are height safety equipment, scaffolding safety nets, ventilation, flooring, electronic data capture systems, appliance tagging and testing, safety and isolation switches, and power distribution boards.
The Safety Show Sydney and concurrently held Sydney Materials Handling are NSW's largest workplace safety event, hosting more than 350 occupational health and safety specialists across three and a half acres at the Sydney Showground.
In a first, Manufacturers Monthly will host daily tours guiding visitors to the newest safety innovations. It's not just the new products that make a visit to the 2008 show worthwhile, according to exhibitor, Braden Murrin of Advanced Scaffold. Murrin says many safety solutions that were once prohibitively expensive and are now within reach of the average builder.
"Fibreglass scaffolds, which were once only really used by energy and rail companies, are a great example," Murrin said. "The price now compares with aluminium, which puts them in reach of everyone who has to work near cabling or wires – even if they're not in the electrical trades."
Another exhibitor with plenty to offer the building and construction sector is Hearlink, which custom-makes ear plugs.
"Custom-moulded hearing protection is much more comfortable than standard ear plugs and doesn't make you hot in summer like ear muffs can," said Hearlink's Johnny Themastoklis.
"Everybody's ears are as unique as their fingerprints, so you can only get a perfect fit and a perfect seal if ear plugs are made to suit you. Tradespeople – especially the younger generation – are aware of the consequences of not looking after their hearing these days, so they're demanding something that feels and works better."
Long-term health is also the focus of International Building Supplies, which will showcase non-slip finishes that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOC) and pH neutral. The company will also demonstrate surface strippers and degreasers powerful enough to remove polymer coatings but so environmentally friendly, tradespeople can work safely without gloves or respirators.
And for those looking for the latest hard-working accessories, there's Lethal Leather's tool belts and nail bags. Made in Australia by 144-year old iconic saddlery, Syd Hill, the tool bags are strong and incredibly practical, according to fifth generation saddler, Leanne Hill.
The hands-on emphasis of The Safety Show and Sydney Materials Handling carries through to full demonstration stage and safety theatre programs, which will let visitors see products from a diverse range of exhibitors in action.
Also daily, free workshops run by Principal Sponsor, WorkCover NSW, will help businesses improve workplace safety, meet workers compensation obligations and manage a situation where a worker is injured.
Those keen to enrich their professional OHS knowledge can register as delegates to The Safety Conference, which will include a study of personal protective equipment (PPE) use in the NSW construction industry.
